Home grown chillies simply taste better. They are inexpensive to grow and offer big payloads of delicious fruits. It pays to grow your own from seed because they are easy to start, and if you grow organically it’s the best way to know that your produce is pesticide-free.
It is very hot chilli This variety is
quite resistant to most pests and diseases.
Traditional Seeds: This is a desi variety. The seeds of Cherry chilli are selected and collected from traditional seed farmers/breeders/keepers from different villages. This plant variety has its natural strength and is suitable for Indian climatic conditions; hence plant vigour is very good.
Naturally Selected Seeds: are the seeds that have survived all natural factors such unpredictable climatic conditions, fluctuating temperatures, erratic rains, etc. and have performed well. These seeds tend to last long.
NON-GMO SEEDS: Since the seeds are collected/procured from farmers own seed collection, the seeds have all natural characteristics. No modification has taken place for these seeds.
Sow the seeds quarter inch below the soil, gently moisten the cells with water, and then place the trays in warm area. Keep the mix moist but never wet. In 5 to 12 days, your cherry chilli seeds should germinate. Germination is best when temperatures are between 20 - 24°C.
Germination of seeds is good and is generally recommended to plant seeds in summer & monsoon & during winter plant seeds indoors in warm temperatures.
Organic fertilizer - Recommended applying well decomposed organic manures – in good amount such cow manure during transplanting stage. You can also add MB-Nutri Granules and cover with planting soil. Recommended application every 25 days.
Transplant: It takes around 22-26 days to grow chillies from seed to ready-to-plant seedlings.
Flowering: use phosphorous rich organic fertilizer for flower initiation; Also take care to Add natural mix micronutrients to the plant 15 – 20 days, this helps in all metabolic and synthetic pathways of plants.
Fruiting: Cherry chilli plant produce fruit between 45 to 65 days after planting. The chilli grows towards the sky. It is a small round chilli – looks similar to cherry. When the fruit matures, it has dark green shade. Then it starts to turn red. Consuming both green and red chilli will definitely spice your meal or dish.
Soil: Suitable for all soil types. Rich, porous, well-drained, substituted with cocopeat/perlite.
Fertilizers: add natural or organic fertilizers. It requires timely supply of organic fertilizers which comprises of all essential nutrients. Adding enough fertilizers before the flower initiation, will help in good vigour, good numbers of fruit setting and healthy produce at the end. Make sure to notice any signs of deficiencies that might appear on the plant, especially the leaves
Water: Regular water for even moisture, Do not over water
Light: Plenty of sunlight; it plays an essential role from flower initiation to fruit setting, pollination and growth.
Pest Control: Cherry chilli plant is generally resistant to most sucking pest and diseases. Add natural Neem based insecticide or herbal insecticides every 15 to 20 days, to prevent the pest from attacking the plants.
Disorders: Damping off, Fruit Rot & Die Back, Leaf spots, fusarium wilt & Leaf curl Virus and fruit toughness, are the most common disorders.
Elements that play a vital role in cherry chilli production
Calcium & Boron are very essential for flowering, pollination and fruit setting. It also prevents flower and fruit dropping. Calcium plays an essential role in the cell wall structure and Boron in pollination. These nutrients are required in very minute quantities.
FERROUS –Fe (iron) & ZINC - Zn
Ferrous & Zinc are also essential micronutrients that are required to keep the plant healthy, disease free and green.
Ferrous is essential for DNA synthesis, respiration & Photosynthesis. Iron is involved in the synthesis of chlorophyll, and it is essential for the maintenance of chloroplast structure and function. Use Fe-EDTA or Fe –EDDHA at 0.5g /Litre for soil application only. Give around 250-500ml of above solution as per plant stage.
Zinc – plays a role in formation of Chlorophyll, carbohydrates, conversion of starch to sugar, and stem elongation. Use Zn-EDTA at 0.5g /Litre for soil application only. Give around 250-500ml of above solution as per plant stage.
Tending Seedlings
Chilli seedlings are delicate when they first emerge. The true leaves appear in 2 weeks. At this point, feed seedlings with diluted, water-soluble chilli fertilizer. Keep the soil moist but not wet. Wet soil can encourage fungal diseases that cause seedlings to rot or “damp off.”
Tending Small Plants
Cherry chilli plants should be around 8- to 10-inches tall and garden-ready after eight weeks. Indoor grown seedlings are tender, have weak stems, and need time to adjust to full sun. If directly planted outdoors, they will develop leaf burn and may die. To avoid this, they need to be hardened off for at least a week before planting. Hardening off means acclimating seedlings from their cushy indoor growing conditions to the windy, sunny outdoors where temperatures fluctuate.
To harden seedlings off, place the potted plants in a protected spot that gets a few hours of sun per day. Each day move them to a new location where they get a little more light and wind each day. After a week or so, they should be tough enough to plant in the garden.
Garden or Container Planting
Choose a good spot for your Chilli plants. They require at least 8 hours of full sun and well-drained soil that’s fertile. Young grows well with some support from sticks inserted in the pot. Tying the plant loosely with a string to the stick prevents the plant from any damage & breaking.
Water
Water regularly to keep root moist. As plants grow, they will demand more water. Do not over water. Remember to keep the soil in wet & dry state, this will ensure proper oxygen supply to the roots. Chillies are such aggressive feeders and water hounds that you have to give serious attention to container-grown plants. Start with a medium to large pot. Add MB-Nutri Granules for stronger stems and better root development. Container-grown chillies need to be watered daily and fed more frequently, but if you give them ample attention, they should thrive and produce beautifully.
Pruning
Use sharp, clean pruners to cut whole branches back to main stems as needed. Try to maintain productive fruit and flower-laden branches, if at all possible. As a precautionary measure, it’s wise to dip pruners in a 10% bleach solution when pruning from plant to plant, just to avoid the possibility of spreading disease. Dip and wipe the pruners after pruning one plant and going to another.
Enjoy your home grown Cherry chillies.
